PROJECT SCOPE
Presently this site supports two 1950s ranch houses adjacent to a main artery of Capitola, Capitola Road. The property owners were interested in redeveloping the land with 24 independent townhouses. An intimate urban setting was developed, with dimensions analogous to alley streets in the Mission district. While the street ends in a cul-de-sac, pedestrians can access surrounding neighborhoods via footpath. The architectural vocabulary derives from traditional row houses but with a contemporary attitude toward building materials and detailing. Six house prototypes are implemented to minimize the apparent mass of the project towards neighbors and each dwelling has a private outdoor space and direct street entry. A folded galvanized steel roof wraps the entire collection of homes.
